Garifuna Settlement Day in Belize

Every November, Belize comes alive with the vibrant sights, sounds, and flavors of Garifuna Settlement Day. This public holiday honors the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize’s shores in the 1800s and celebrates their enduring spirit. Descended from West African, Kalinago, and Arawak ancestry, the Garifuna people were exiled from St. Vincent by the British after fiercely resisting colonial rule. Their journey brought them to various parts of Central America, including the southern regions of Belize.

Led by Thomas Vincent Ramos, a Garifuna leader, Belize formally recognized the Garifuna people’s contributions in 1941. As a result, November 19th became known as Garifuna Settlement Day. Today, the holiday serves as a powerful reminder of their resilience and the rich heritage they have infused into Belizean society.

Garifuna Settlement Day is celebrated with immense enthusiasm across Belize. One can find grand festivities particularly in communities with strong Garifuna roots, such as Dangriga, Hopkins, and Punta Gorda. The day’s festivities are as vibrant as the Garifuna culture itself:

  • Reenactments of Arrival: Early morning rituals feature Yurumein, a reenactment of the Garifuna people’s arrival by canoe. Dressed in traditional attire, participants paddle ashore while singing, symbolizing the journey and struggle of their ancestors.
  • Music and Dance: The pulsating rhythms of drums set the tone for the day, with traditional Garifuna music such as paranda and punta taking center stage. Dance performances express the history, emotions, and stories of the Garifuna people.
  • Food: Throughout the country, families and friends will be enjoying traditional Garifuna dishes like hudut (a coconut milk-based fish stew served with mashed plantains), cassava bread, and darasa (green banana tamales. These foods reflect the Garifuna’s deep connection to their land and heritage.
  • Cultural Parades and Events: Vibrant parades, cultural displays, and speeches honor the legacy of Garifuna leaders and the community’s contributions to Belize’s national identity.
  • Community Unity: This year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Roots; Sharing Our Culture,” emphasizes the importance of cultural pride and unity. The theme encourages all Belizeans and visitors to embrace the Garifuna way of life and share in its beauty.
